The Catch Up

I know, I know, I've been supremely neglectful.
But before you report me to the social services of the blogsphere, in my defence I have been RIDICULOUSLY busy with The Day Job. I've been writing so much for the magazines that I can scarcely put together a witty email or a cohesive text, let alone indulge in some repartee here online.
But briefly, to surmise...
The weekend madness to Miami was exactly that – but brilliant. Flying half way round the world and back in 96 hours to report on an International, squeeze in two interviews, man the camera and catch up with friends was exhausting. But I was thoroughly spoilt by my hosts – read more in the Winter issue of The Polo Magazine – and the trip firmly cemented my love of Palm Beach.
The sunshine played a huge part in this.
But also the exceptional company, a couple of silly evenings and martinis at The Grill and much needed omelettes and black coffees in the Welly Deli both on Southshore Blvd. I also managed to catch up with a new friend in Palm Beach – an amble around Worth Avenue and supper at Nick & Johnnies was a perfect 'hello' – and also a belated Birthday glass of wine on the beach at the St Regis Bal Harbour with another lovely friend before my flight home. If you're passing through Wellington or Palm Beach or hitting up the Miami mayhem, then these are all must-try locations.
The Day Job SLR was working too hard for personal snaps but here are a couple of the gorgeous evening light. Ffffeeeeelllll the sunshine!

The England team. And yes that is Vanilla Ice in the centre. Nach

Ready for Battle

So today's the day. England versus the USA.
The UK Ladies team (Hazel Jackson, Claire Donnelly, Sarah Wiseman, Nina Clarkin) take on their US counterparts (Melissa Ganzi, Sunny Hale, Gillian Johnston, Tiffany Busch) in the first game of the afternoon. I've just heard that Vanilla Ice is presenting the prizes so the girls and I have just got a little American-excited.
Then it's The Big Game with our boys (Tom Morley, Jack Richardson, Max Routledge, Richard Le Poer) entering the gladiatorial arena against the American guys (Jeff Hall, Nic Roldan, Carlitos Gracida, Marc Ganzi).
Having spent yesterday interviewing the Ganzis – Palm Beach polo's power couple – and wandering the pretty streets of millionaire's row AKA Worth Avenue, I'm seriously looking forward to an afternoon's polo. An International is a brilliant way to introduce people to the sport – you don't need to know polo, you just need to pick your allegiance, make yourself a cocktail and enjoy the beautiful weather of the Sunshine State.
This is what The Day Job is seriously good for. Check out the next issue of The Polo Magazine to read about this incredible experience.
For those of you back home, I'm sorry to mention the sunshine again.... although if you're heading to see The Stones tonight, then I'm not that apologetic; you can get your rays from Keith, Ronnie, Charlie and Mick. That's not Doom and Gloom at all. Enjoy.

Miami Bound... Again

Yes, yes, I've been handed the very cruel task of venturing off out of this rain to the sunshine state. HeLLO Miami, I'm baaacccckkkk.

Heading off tomorrow for a manic weekend of work, reporting on the International polo match at Grand Champions Polo Club near Palm Beach and cleverly disguising my chatting up skills by interviewing some seriously cool people. AND I get to catch up with friends too. It may be a whistle stop tour (I touch back down in good ole Blighty on Tuesday) but it is one hell of a tune.
Now for packing... this is going to require some inspiration...

Dear Santa...
I would not be at all adverse to these appearing in my stocking this year...

Making Tracks

A friend just bought this song to my attention and it is now nested firmly in my head alongside the general whirring thoughts which occupy my mind before the working week kicks off again. Which I don't really need at 23.40 on a Sunday evening (it is the dreaded Monday tomorrow after all). On the plus side it's one hell of a song. And the video features pro skater Richie Jackson – who is very good but also has one hell of a moustache. And it's not even a Movember thing.

Giddy with Excitement

The Phone Book Interviews

Another addition to the mini-interviews with my inspirational friends. This sunday, have a read about Miss Giddy Heights, the burlesque dancer who braved coming out of Soho to The Sticks for my birthday.

Job Title: Burlesque Artist

The Big Break: My first professional job was at The Royal Oxford Hotel. It doesn’t sound like a huge break but for me it was amazing. Getting paid to do what you love feels pretty darn good!

I do this job for... so many reasons! For a start it’s bloody good fun, it normally involves copious amounts of alcohol and it’s only serious side effect is that there’s glitter fucking everywhere, in bed, in the bath, sometimes I find it in my mouth... But for me the real joy is the huge scope for creativity. I trained as an actress at The Lee Strasberg School in New York and burlesque allows me to explore and develop a whole host of interesting female characters. It amuses me when people miss understand burlesque and think it’s just stripping; for me it’s all about exploring female identity and female empowerment – I think this is perhaps why it appeals more to women than men, it is a feminist art form.
I couldn't get through the working week without... My smart phone, pathetic as it sounds! I frequently find myself in strange towns up and down the country and without my map app, frankly I don’t know where I’d be!
Who inspires you... funny, beautiful women, who aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves. Mae West and Joanna Lumley are my two idols
Which moments are most rewarding? When you hear the audience laugh and cheer. Many performers, myself included, are racked by self-doubt and there’s nothing more lovely than knowing you’ve made someone laugh.
What skills are vital for success? An ability to laugh at yourself and a positive self image. My bottom once appeared in The Daily Mail, it wasn’t a good angle, it was daylight and it really wasn’t pretty! I cried for two days! Before realising I was being a self indulgent wanker!
What essentials do you carry in your handbag? Nappy rash cream! It’s essential for nipple tassel-chafed nipples
Best shoes for dancing? I have a pair that I bought off Ebay that I adore. They are so well worn that the name has come off but they are of the ballroom dancing variety, with soft suede bottoms that make you glide around and look elegant!
Where do you get your costumes? I also trained as a theatrical milliner and costume maker so I do make a lot of my own stuff but Ebay is fantastic for one offs and buying bling for embellishing! My favourite dress is the one I wear for my Cruella de Ville routine, I bought it off a drag queen on Ebay!
Best watering hole in London? All dirty dives in Soho I’m afraid! Trisha’s (one of those unmarked doors in Soho that only very hardened drinkers know about) and for something a little swankier.. though not much, Blacks on Dean Street.
And in The Sticks? Undoubtably, The Yew Tree, Conderton, nestled at the foot of Bredon Hill, where I grew up.
Words of wisdom? It’s very important to try.  Don’t be afraid to make yourself vulnerable.
Best professional advice? Don’t listen too hard to other peoples advice, just do what you want to do, if you think something’s interesting and funny, the chances are others will too.
The Head's Up: I’ve been doing a regular old school revue night with a host of very lovely singers and musicians called The Soho Hobo at The Soho Theatre. The evening is hosted by a brilliant singer called Tim Arnold and guest acts include Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) Jesse Wallace and little ‘ole me! The Daily Mail have been back to this one and been very nice – so fickle are the press!
The Next Big Thing: I’m very excited about New Years, as I’ll be clocking up a number of exciting gigs but the climax will be at Soho House’s grand New Year's bash, so I’m very excited! I’ve also got a part in Michael Winterbottom’s latest film which comes out in March, entitled ‘The Look of Love’. I share an on screen snog with Steve Coogan!
The Plug: Do check out my website www.missgiddyheights.co.uk I’m available for parties, weddings, events, bar mitzvahs...etc!

Beautiful & Damned

So Birthday Round Two...

The Sinner's Enclosure at Hotel Du Vin was the host, baddie bags for the guests included Marlboros and pages from 50 Shades and entertainment – when it wasn't coming from my friends – was in the pint-sized Dita Von Teese-esque form of Miss Giddy Heights
Turning 26 never felt so good.

Putting On The Ritz

So, you really know who your friends are when they surprise you with a night at The Ritz and a champagne-fuelled party at Crazy Horse for your birthday...

To say that my 26th celebrations started off with a bang is like saying Guy Fawkes only envisaged a couple of sparks or that Petronious organised chaste little parties. My pre-actual birth date night was an all guns blazing, seriously saucy event!
Coerced into going down to London under the premise that The Housemate needed me to host an event of hers, I scrounged a couple of hours off work from The Polo Magazine to hot foot it down the M4. "Park up your car and meet me by Green Park Tube," says The Housemate.
A quick motorway gas station stop for a wardrobe change – thankfully into a little black dress and a vintage fur – and I trot down Albemarle Street and pop up in front of The Ritz. "We're just going down here..." And then The Housemate leads me through the polished revolving doors and into the unique splendour that can only be the most iconic hotel in the world. Keep your new sky scrapers and the latest bling-tastic places to lay your head, The Ritz has just got It. In spades. Golden ones, with workers in polished-button uniforms manning them. GAHHHHHH.
Spiriting up to our room for the evening – yes we were staying there – I was greeted with cake, cards and a girlfriend leaping out of the bathroom to surprise me. Plastering on the eyeliner – which is very difficult when you're jumping up and down with excitement – we then made our way back downstairs for drinks... and yet more surprises as lots of beautiful faces belonging to my girlfriends in London rocked up. All organised by The Housemate. Crystal glasses of Louis Roederer, more cake and a martini with a twist later and present number two was pushed into my hands. I know, how could there be MORE??
As if the evening wasn't glamorous enough, I then opened tickets to catch Kelly Brook and the Crazy Horse girls in cabaret at the South Bank. Almost to the day, my girls and I had been in Paris celebrating my 25th and watching these Parisian beauties shake their asymmetric wigs and their regimented boobs at their Club round the back of the Plaza Athenee in gay Paree – and now we were off to see them by the Thames.
More champagne was a perfect whet of the palette to keep us all in fine whooping voice whilst the Crazy Horse girls flashed their Louboutins at us during an amazing show. If you haven't seen them yet, cross your fingers and hope you can still get tickets. Try here
Two hours, four bottles and a definite commitment to our gym membership later we hopped into cabs to hit the dance floor at Mahiki. (NB: If you say it's your birthday and smile a great deal you seem to get in free EVERYWHERE...)
Because we are all committed career girls, we were very civilised and made it home before 2am. However much I love to dance, the thought of my head hitting The Ritz pillow was too good to turn down, even if Rhiana was blaring out a big tune.
Waking up in a fluffy Ritz dressing gown and popping next door for breakfast at The Wolseley isn't just how every birthday should begin... it's how my Wednesday/Thursday should begin ALWAYS. I know I would never tire of it.
Thank you lovely girls, especially The Housemate for organising an evening I will never, ever forget.
When the Crazy Horse girls come to London, we don't just go crazy. We go VERY crazy. X

PS: I hasten to add that there are none of our own pictures on this post as we were too busy living the moment to capture it on camera... that and the fact that the surprise meant I was without my point n shoot...
